Preparing to take to the field.

This section is to show you the basic requirements that the 2nd Missouri Cavalry maintains. If purchasing items from anywhere other than "The Preferred Sutler" link, please get approval from your Chain of Command.

Basic Uniform: Features

Headgear

There are many headgear items that are acceptable. The kepi, forage cap, slouch hat and many civilian style hats. Research what best suits your style and what  was required or available to our units.

Shirt

A 100% homespun cotton shirt, drop shoulder pattern with gathered sleeves and cuffs and a placket front. They were available in a wide range of colors, from plain to patterned. Pockets were an option as well. No pleated or bib shirts. Camp Harris and woven checked are both good choices.

Vest

The vest was made of kersey wool or jean wool, with a cotton back panel. It came in a variety of colors. A buckle and belt for tightening located in the lower back area.  Various pocket designs and locations. Civilian style vests are acceptable if historically correct.

Shell Jacket

A hip length jacket tapering to the waist, with full sleeves and a standing collar. It was made in kersey wool and jean wool. Confederate coat colors ranged from cadet grey to butternut. Buttons numbered from 4 to 9, and were the "Block C" style. Federal coat was dark blue in color with yellow cavalry trim and yellow outlined "horse head" panel, with Federal "C" eagle style buttons.

Mounted Trousers

Trousers with a reinforced seat in them. Made from kersey wool, jean wool and cotton twill. They range in color from dark blue, sky blue, cadet grey to butternut. Various style pockets. A buckle in the back for tightening, and buttons for closure and attaching braces. Don't forget to buy braces with your trousers.

Cavalry Boots

Heavy leather riding boots with a flap extending upward in front. Stitched and pegged soles. Historically correct, one piece front, construction style preferred. Two piece construction style acceptable.

This is just a basic overview of the uniform. Please contact your Chain of Command with any specific questions you may have.
