Preparing to take to the field.

This section is to show you the basic requirements that the 2nd Missouri Cavalry maintains. If purchasing items from anywhere other than "The Preferred Sutler" link, please get approval from your Chain of Command.

Basic Leather and Field Gear: Features

Saber Belt

Heavy harness leather belt, utilizing a two piece belt plate to secure. Two saber hangers with hooks on the left side, and a shoulder (Sam Brown) strap. Can be either black, or russet brown in color.

Saber Belt Plate

Saber plates are two piece buckles, with a plate and a hook. They are cast in brass. There are many options available, from the standard Enlisted Model US 1863, to various CS and CSA styles.

Cap Pouch

The cap pouch is a stiff molded leather pouch with inner flap, ears, and wool. There are slight variations, and come in black and russet brown colors.

Holster

The standard issue holster was worn on the right side, with the pistol butt forward. It was made of leather and had either a slot or flap closure. It was manufactured with slight variations and is black or russet brown in color. Several arsenal stamps are available. Ensure you purchase the correct caliber holster for your pistol.

Cavalry Carbine Cartridge Box

The cavalry carbine cartridge box came in a variety of styles and designs. It was often designed for use with a specific firearm. It comes in black and russet brown color. Ensure you purchase one that accompanies your long arm.

Canteen

Canteens were varied and many styles were available. Tin and wood being the primary construction materials. Usually with a cloth cover, sling, cork and chain. A cavalry sling can be purchased as well. We recommend a stainless steel canteen with pewter spout.

Haversack

The haversack was available in canvas, tarred canvas, printed material and, in rarer cases, leather. Civilian or military style is acceptable.

Cavalry Gauntlets

Gauntlets of a buff leather and heavy construction. If you are going to be mounted ensure you purchase good quality and good fitting gauntlets.

Carbine Sling

The carbine sling is made of light weight and durable leather. It consists of a brass buckle and tip, which should be sewn and riveted on. As well as a swivel snap hook for attachment to the carbine.
